Solving the Mystery
3rd graders try to figure out "What animal am I?" based on the clues they collected in their scavenger hunt.
Burrton GPS Activity
On Friday, Oct. 10, Burrton 3rd and 5th grade students participated in a GPS scavenger hunt activity. Here's an overview of the activity:
Those involved:
Bentley Richert (ESSDACK), Tammy Worcester (ESSDACK), Kevin Honeycutt (ESSDACK) Becky Herl (Instructional Technology - Burrton), Greg Robinson (Burrton 5th Grade Teacher), and Emily Schmidt (Burrton 3rd Grade Teacher)
Sept. 23 - Bentley, Tammy, Becky, Greg, and Emily met to determine the purpose and logistics of the activity. Both teachers decided to do a scavenger hunt where students would gather clues: 3rd grade - life cycles; 5th grade - explorers. The class would be split into teams and each team would have a handheld GPS that would "lead" them to each clue.
Bentley, Tammy, Emily, and Greg took a walking tour of Burrton, decided where they wanted to hide the clues, and set waypoints on a GPS.
Between Sept. 23 and Oct. 10:
Bentley used computer software to distribute the waypoints to 5 GPS units (one per team). He also changed the routes so that each team would find the clues in a different order.
Emily, Tammy, and Greg printed the clues and put them into envelopes that were color-coded and labeled for each team.
On Oct. 10:
12:00 - Bentley and Tammy hid the clues.
12:30 - 3rd graders are given instructions and begin their "hunt".
1:15 - teams assemble back at their startin
2:00 - The process is repeated with 5th grade students.
Despite being tired and thirsty, everyone agreed it was a great learning experience for the students - and for the adults!
